Corporation Red Flags & Scams

Because EVE Online permits unregulated player-run organizations, predatory players frequently create corporations specifically designed to exploit and tax inexperienced beginners.

If you encounter any of the following red flags during recruitment or after joining, walk away immediately.

1. Excessive Corporation Tax Rates

Whenever you complete an agent mission reward or destroy pirate NPCs for bounties, the game automatically deducts the corporation tax rate and deposits it into the corporate master wallet.

Highsec Tax Rates Above 5% Are a Scam

In High-security space, corporations have virtually zero recurring operational expenses—no sovereignty upkeep bills, no orbital infrastructure fuel costs, and no territorial warfare expenses.

• Acceptable Highsec Tax: 0% to 5% (used to fund replacement starter frigates and blueprint libraries).
• Red Flag Highsec Tax: Any rate exceeding 5% (e.g. 10% to 15%). The CEO is simply skimming your hard-earned mission and ratting income directly into their private wallet!

Acceptable Tax Thresholds by Space:

• Highsec: 0% to 5% max.
• Lowsec: 5% to 12% max (funds local structure defense and gate observation). Any tax rate greater than 12% is excessive.
• Nullsec & Wormholes: 10% to 15% max (subsidizes alliance Ship Replacement Programs, Ansiblex jump bridges, and capital fleets). Any tax rate exceeding 15% is predatory.

2. Predatory Ore & Loot Buyback Programs

Many corporations advertise “Convenient Local Buyback! Sell us your mined ore and ratting loot directly in-system without hauling to Jita!”

While legitimate corporate buyback programs save you hauling time, predatory buybacks exploit rookies who don’t know market math:

The 90% to 95% Jita Buy Ceiling

A fair, legitimate corporate buyback program pays 90% to 95% of Jita Buy (or Jita Split) value. The 5% to 10% discount fairly compensates the corporation’s industrial freight pilots for fuel, jump freighter fatigue, and market sales tax.

• Legitimate Buyback: 90% to 95% Jita Buy value.
• Predatory Buyback: Any rate below 90% (e.g. 70% to 80%). If a CEO demands a 20% to 30% discount on your mined ore or gas, they are ripping you off. You are far better off compressing your ore and hiring a public courier service like PushX or Red Frog Freight to haul it to Jita 4-4.

3. Mandatory “Free Labor” or “Tithe Mining”

One of the most insidious scams targeting new players is the mandatory corporate mining operation:

• The CEO schedules an “All Hands Corporation Mining Fleet”.
• Members are instructed to mine asteroid belts or ice anomalies for 3 to 4 hours.
• All mined ore is deposited into the CEO’s industrial hauler under the guise of “building our future corporate Citadel structure”.
• The Reality: The Citadel is never anchored. Two months later, the CEO kicks everyone, unanchors the assets, and transfers hundreds of millions of ISK worth of refined minerals to their personal alt account.
• The Golden Rule: Never mine for free. Legitimate corporations always pay their miners on the spot using market buyback formulas or shares of fleet yield.

4. Mass-Recruitment Spam Corporations

Beware of automated, impersonal recruitment campaigns:

Avoid Blind EVEmail Spam Corporations

If you undock and receive an automated, copy-pasted in-game EVEmail from corporations such as Absolute Order, Absolute Glory, or HALO saying: “Greetings Capsuleer! We noticed you are new to New Eden! Click here to join our 1,000-man family!”—delete the mail immediately.

These mass-recruitment mills use automated bot scripts to scrape new character creation feeds. They recruit hundreds of clueless rookies each week to:

1. Act as tax cows, automatically pocketing 10% to 15% of all rookie bounties.
2. Provide free targets for rival highsec war declarations (wardecs). When an aggressive mercenary group declares war on a 1,000-member mass-recruitment corp, you will be hunted down and destroyed at every empire stargate while your CEO sits safely offline.

A quality corporation recruits intentionally through human conversation, interviews, and community alignment—not automated spam.
