Finding & Vetting Starter Corporations

Choosing your first player corporation is the single most critical decision of your early EVE Online career. A welcoming, active community will accelerate your progression by months; a dead or predatory corporation will make the game feel like a lonely chore.

Here is the exact step-by-step methodology veteran pilots use to vet corporations before applying.

Step 1: Timezone Compatibility (Rule #1 of Corporation Vetting)

The most common rookie mistake is joining a corporation based solely on its member count, only to find that all 500 members are asleep during your playtime!

EVE operates on a single global server clock (EVE Time / UTC). Player activity clusters into three primary global timezones:

  • US Timezone (USTZ): ~00:00 to 06:00 UTC (North & South American evenings).
  • Australian / Asian Timezone (AUTZ): ~08:00 to 14:00 UTC.
  • European Timezone (EUTZ): ~17:00 to 23:00 UTC.

How to Check Timezone Activity on Zkillboard

Never rely on a recruiter’s verbal promise that “we have pilots active around the clock!” Always verify their claims using Zkillboard (zkillboard.com):

  1. Go to zkillboard.com and type the corporation’s name into the top search bar.
  2. Open the corporation’s killboard page.
  3. Look for the Activity Heatmap or the 90-Day Hourly Activity Bar Chart.
  4. The horizontal axis represents the 24 hours of EVE Time (00 to 23 UTC).
  5. Inspect the Spikes:
    • If the killboard bars spike between 18:00 and 22:00 UTC, that corporation is heavily European (EUTZ).
    • If the bars spike between 01:00 and 04:00 UTC, that corporation is heavily American (USTZ).
    • If the hourly bars during your active hours are completely flat, do not join that corporation. You will be flying completely alone.

Step 2: The Discord Recruiter Interview

Always join the corporation’s public Discord server or in-game public recruitment channel first. Ask the recruiter these essential questions:

  1. “What daily fleet activities do you run during my active hours (e.g. 01:00 to 03:00 UTC)?”
  2. “Do you provide free starter ships, skillbooks, or a Ship Replacement Program (SRP) for new pilots?”
  3. “What is your corporation tax rate on bounty payouts and mission rewards?” (Should be under 5% in highsec, under 12% in low/nullsec).
  4. “Where is your primary staging system, and do you offer corporate hauling from Jita 4-4?”
  5. “Are voice comms (Discord/Mumble) mandatory for everyday mining or only for combat fleets?”

A good recruiter will answer patiently, welcome beginner questions, and provide clear orientation documents. A bad recruiter will evade questions or push you to immediately contract all your assets to them.
